Pinocchio’s Original Italian Ice Cream

pinocchios

Pinocchio’s Original Italian Ice Cream is a Sanibel tradition for more than 33 years.  Tom and Donna Puma are the fourth owners of this landmark since 2007. Together with their daughter and General Manager Stephanie and their friendly staff, they serve up their unique homemade Italian signature ice creams that keep loyal fans returning for more to their little green shop in the Seahorse Shopping Center on the east end of Sanibel Island. You cannot miss the shop with its kitchy appeal from the bright green walls and colorful benches to the crowds enjoying their generously sized Pinocchio’s ice cream treats as they listen to the nostalgic music of old TV show tunes.

Geppetto’s Beach Foodies! A little market and bakery offering gourmet grab and go beach cuisine which is representative of streetfood you may find in metropolitan areas of NYC, Paris, towns in Tuscany, Italy and other food meccas that have been part of our wonderful global travels.

Visit Pinocchio’s & Geppetto’s at 362 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel

CHR (Community Housing and Resources, Inc.)

CHR (Community Housing and Resources, Inc.) was formed in 1979 as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization to address the growing need for affordable housing in the Sanibel community. In 1983, an ordinance was passed by the City of Sanibel that established the Affordable Housing Program and CHR was designated as the city’s housing foundation. Today, CHR owns housing units at 11 locations on Sanibel: 74 rental properties, including a 12-unit complex just for senior residents and 14 Limited Equity Ownership (LEO) homes through the Coast and Islands Community Land Trust.

Thanks to CHR, people who work full-time on Sanibel, as well as retired and disabled residents of Sanibel, are able to live in an area that would normally be too costly for them. For full-time workers, this means being able to live close to where they work. Not only does it eliminate a long commute to the island, it benefits island businesses that rely on an accessible workforce.

Other residents of CHR’s properties are seniors and disabled islanders with a long history on Sanibel. When a spouse passes away and a widow or widower is forced to sell their island home where they lived for many years, a CHR rental unit can mean the difference between staying here and having to move off-island or even out of state. The same holds true for long-time residents who become disabled. After being such a big part of their community, these residents should not have to feel forced to leave, and having an Affordable Housing Program for Sanibel ensures that they will have a chance to stay.

Currently, CHR houses 154 residents, and 50 of those are children. Operational and program costs are paid first through rent collection. The City of Sanibel also provides funding, but the balance of CHR’s costs rely on generous financial gifts from our island community. For more information about CHR and affordable housing on Sanibel, visit online at SanibelCHR.org or call 239-472-1189.

Captain Bubby’s IsLAND Tours was created from the need to further introduce the extensive list of area attractions, many events and outstanding business to both visitors and locals. Concierge tour services, such as Captain Bubby’s IsLAND Tours, have been created to fill the gap between touring individually and a fully escorted tour.

Mission Statement: Our mission is to satisfy your curiosity through activities that will leave you exhilarated and remain in your mind and heart for many years to come.

Captain Bubby is a local resident who has been exploring and discovering the area’s natural treasures for over 40 years. The founder, Bubby Howell knew the first time on Sanibel he was home and knew he was meant to be part of the continued conservation efforts so vital to the area. Your guide is a trained docent who thinks creatively and knows how to bring to life the stories of the area. Bubby is one of less than 1,500 individuals listed on the Honor Roll of Florida Master Naturalists. Motivated to aid in the protection and enhancement of the area’s fragile ecosystems, Bubby teaches people their role in coexisting, ensuring protection of the wildlife, natural habitats and surrounding aquatic ecosystem.

A portion of every tour is donated back to one of the non- profit agencies within Lee County, FL.
